“Lost” Sub-Mariner rendering –by NamorFanatic

Those Conan panels started off the year so well, I figured I should continue the trend. Marvel Comics’ undersea hero–Prince Namor the First, the mighty Sub-Mariner—has been in print a long time. His powerful half-Atlantean physique—clad only in a green fish-scale Speedo–doesn’t age like a normal human’s. So he fought the Nazis in WWII…and sometimes got captured.

This is a scene of what happened that the comics couldn’t show you: the Sub-Mariner stripped of his Speedo, awesome strength depleted by dehydration, as a leering, decrepit Nazi commander salivates over what’s going to happen next…

I can’t take credit for the rendering, just a keen eye for cobbling things together from multiple sources and modifying them via Photoshop.

Mock Sub Cover for Issue #100 – NamorFanatic

I figured I’d get off one more mock Sub-Mariner cover before I enter the busiest six weeks of the year for me. This one’s a wraparound cover for a landmark issue #100: “Atlantis in ruins! Its hero prince overcome by an alliance of his greatest foes—the barbarian leader Attuma, the brute Orka, the bestial Tiger Shark, and the armored evil mastermind, Warlord Krang! In the “Ship of Doom” trilogy, the mighty Sub-Mariner faces execution by undersea firing squad! (How could firearms possibly function underwater? Don’t even go there.) Here’s muscular Prince Namor bound to a pole just before the hail of bullets…and an improved rendering in which the villains have stripped the captive hero of his Speedo, leaving little doubt what anatomy the twisted gunmen have in their sights…

Because watching the Sub-Mariner suffer never gets old, here’s one of the best panels of him grimacing in pain, from an issue of HULK in which he guest starred. One of Namor’s arch-enemies, Tiger Shark, decided the valiant prince’s powerful neck looked too good not to munch on. (Too bad we don’t get to see the rest of Namor’s naked physique convulsing in agony!) The artist is Ed McGuinness, famed for his hypermuscled takes on the Hulk and Superman.
