The Two Hundredth and Seventy First of One Thousand and One Nights – by Amalaric

Corporal Matt Hewlit lived his days in a haze of fear, disgust, and dwindling hope. It had been several months since the fateful ambush and, by his reckoning, life (if one could call it that) had been sheer hall ever since. Prodded and probed by mysterious ‘inspectors’, he had cringed with humiliation but that was nothing compared to the beatings, electro-torture, forced workouts to the point of utter exhaustion…seemed like a million ways devised merely to make the tall, blond marine suffer. Maybe worst of all was that, from Matt’s point of view, there just didn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason for the sustained torment- no questions were asked or information otherwise solicited- he was a low ranked enlisted grunt of little strategic value to interrogators or intelligence gatherers…so, why the near-daily dose of brutal, sadistic treatment? The desperate soldier screamed the question a thousand time as he hung exhausted in his bonds dripping salt sweat and blood…

Matt thought that his searing ordeal of near-daily torment was merely at the whim and for the pleasure of his babbling foreign captors, but he was wrong. OK, yeah, they did enjoy their work…but there were very practical reasons for doing what they did (with such gusto) and Matt was very soon to discover the method in what he considered (and would until his dying day) to be the madness, as he woke one morning to a kick in the ribs and an unaccustomed command in unaccented English, ‘Get your ass up, boy- today’s market day!’

  1. Sir Amalaric, you did it again! A fantastic pic with terse story line. The perfect young stud subjected to a frightening new life, torture, humiliation and abuse. And THEN he finds out he’s going to be sold. Wow! All in two paragraphs. Thank you for publishing this example of your incredible skills. You are the best!

  2. Thanks, Steve- your very kind comments inspire me to keep on. BTW, I think there are at least two more Matt Hewlit episodes in the hopper…wink!

  3. Although one almost wishes it, as it had been written so intensely, it is precisely logical, that no further treatments are described in this second part of the story. Since the memories of them are still fresh, both with the reader, and of course, with Corporal Helwit, it would have been too much of a good thing. The final sentence, and thus the resolution to the tortures of the corporal, holds neither for him, nor for the reader any relief, if one considers, that here the actual reality of the world has been converted into excellent art. ⭐⭐⭐
